Anxiety Therapy

A certain level of anxiety is natural, and maybe even helpful. Too much worry can cause you to feel overwhelmed and unable to function in your daily life. Sometimes anxiety can make it hard for you to be around others, sleep or do your job.

You can feel at ease

If you are currently dealing with debilitating anxiety that interferes with your ability to go to work, enjoy social activities and/or get enough sleep at night, you are not alone.  Many people struggle with distorted beliefs about themselves and the world that get in their way of living the life they want.  It can be very scary to make changes even if you know you would be happier, because the known can feel more comfortable.  Many folks experience so much self-doubt and fear of judgement that they avoid situations like spending time with peers or interacting with colleagues.

I can help you identify strategies to relieve stress and worrying. To begin with, it can be helpful to understand how the brain works and the reasons why humans experience anxiety. Evolutionarily speaking, human brains were developed with the primary goal of survival in the face of dangers. There were many dangers back in the day that we do not deal with now, yet our brain still orients in this manner as if we were in physical danger. So there is nothing abnormal or wrong with you for worrying.

My approach to treating anxiety is catered to your needs. If you mostly deal with anxious thoughts, I help you to increase mindful awareness and learn to create distance from the storylines in your head. This process stems from Buddhist Psychology that suggests suffering is due to grasping and/or repulsion, and that when we reduce these responses, distress can be reduced.

If anxiety is felt more in your body, I will incorporate somatic tools to help you recognize and release tension. These somatic techniques incorporate ideas from Ecopsychology, mindfulness practices and somatic trauma-modalities including Brainspotting.

By the time we wrap up our anxiety therapy, my goal is for you to feel more aware and capable of managing life's stressors. There will always be ups and downs, but I can help you to feel more confident in your ability to de-stress and apply the types of coping skills you need to be fully engaged in your life.
