Parenting Support

Parenting can be an amazing journey, and is often incredibly challenging. In our current society, there is generally not enough support and resources to take good care of your kids, yourself, your relationships as well as manage financially.

Parenting support

Support is here for you

When you decide to be a parent, you probably have an idea of what you think it will be like.  You may make decisions about how the nursery will look, how you'll feed your child and parent groups you'll join.  Chances are, the experience of being pregnant, giving birth and then caring for a baby does not turn out as expected.  It may also take a while to feel an emotional connection to your child. There are a lot of well-meaning professionals, family members and peers that may give you advice that causes you to feel judged, compared and ashamed of your feelings and behaviors. Initially as a parent, you may experience so many transitions and stressors that you become overwhelmed.  Hormonal changes can contribute to the emotional impact, as well as a complete overhaul of the life that you knew.  This shame and/or distress can happen even if you have all the support and financial means that you need.  Please recognize that you are not alone if this initial parenting journey doesn't feel the way you thought it would.  Every parent wants the best for their kids, and that is why self-care often takes a back burner.  If you are undergoing challenges related to being a parent, you do not have to suffer alone. Therapy can be a safe and non-judgmental place to share the experiences you may be worried about telling others.

My approach is to help you increase awareness of your emotional and physical needs by identifying and connecting you with external and internal resources.  Sometimes it is beneficial to explore experiences you had as a child and understand the attachment dynamics between family members.  These patterns can greatly influence the way you parent as well as your hopes and expectations for the parenting journey. I help to normalize the struggles and support you in shifting unhelpful beliefs and assumptions.

Drawing on personal experiences as a parent as well as many years of working with children and families, I can also offer you strategies for managing specific issues you are having with your children.  I incorporate aspects of the Good Inside Approach by Dr. Becky Kennedy. I support parents in becoming confident in their ability to set limits without becoming authoritative. I also help parents to consider new ways of responding to their kids' meltdowns and disruptive behavior that promote a loving and attuned relationship.
