Trauma Therapy

Trauma is anything disturbing that has happened to you or that you've witnessed or heard about. Sometimes people experience disturbing events and are able to quickly shake off the negative effects. In many other cases, unwanted effects can continue long after that trauma occurred.

It is possible to feel better

Many people experience multiple disturbing experiences beginning in childhood such as physical, sexual and/or emotional abuse or neglect.  Maybe you had a narcissistic and/or emotionally fragile parent that didn't make space for your needs and feelings.  If you were raised with a parent dealing with alcoholism, you may have felt the need to keep it all together and or grow up fast.  It's possible your parents are immigrants and have continuously not understood you and the cultural beliefs that inform your behaviors and desires.  Others had relatively smooth childhoods and then experienced a major car accident or were the victim of a crime.   Any of these disturbing events can cause major struggles like feelings of overwhelm, paranoia, dissociation, extreme fear and/or desire to avoid certain scenarios.  Your life can be significantly limited and impacted by past traumas and may cause you to have problems with relationships, intimacy, career and many other challenges.  Regardless of what type of experience you've had or how long it lasted, you deserve to feel relief.

When a traumatic event occurs, the amygdala part of the brain reacts immediately to try and help us survive the initial situation. Sometimes our brains can stay stuck in this initial way of perceiving and responding to a threat, even though it has passed. Through therapy, I can help your brain and body to reprocess memories and become un-stuck.

Mainly for treating trauma, I use a technique called Brainspotting — a tool that connects the mind and body, and helps people identify, process and release emotional and physical pain by accessing the deeper, subcortical parts of the brain. Disturbing experiences are stored in the body and often we cannot change reactions and distress by staying in the conscious part of the brain. Brainspotting can offer you much quicker relief than other methods of treatment.
